[AI/Satellite & Drone/MRV Verification] Reducing Carbon in Rice Paddies… Thanks Carbon Validates ‘AI Solution’ for 370,000-Ton Reduction

Thanks Carbon, an AI climate-tech startup, has been final-selected for the "2025 2nd Greenhouse Gas International Reduction Feasibility Study Support Project" alongside Korea South-East Power (KOEN), officially launching its entry into the global carbon market.

Through this project organized by KOTRA (Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency), Thanks Carbon will embark on a demonstration project aimed at reducing methane emissions from rice farming in the Battambang region of Cambodia.

The core technology applied is the AWD (Alternate Wetting and Drying) method. By intermittently drying the rice paddies instead of keeping them continuously flooded, this technique reduces methane(CH₄) emissions by up to 40% and cuts water usage by approximately 28%. Through this demonstration project, AWD will be implemented across roughly 42,000 hectares of rice paddies, with an expected annual greenhouse gas reduction of about 378,000 tons (tCO₂-eq). This is equivalent to the annual carbon emissions of approximately 82,000 vehicles.

Thanks Carbon utilizes its proprietary AI solution, ‘Haimdall’, to comprehensively analyze diverse data points—including satellite imagery, climate factors, and crop growth patterns. It then quantitatively verifies the carbon reduction effects through a digital MRV (Measurement, Reporting, and Verification) system. While the carbon credit market has traditionally been dominated by manual, paper-based verification, Thanks Carbon’s key strength lies in introducing a precise, transparent digital verification method that automatically generates reports meeting international standards.

“This feasibility study serves as a benchmark for climate-tech models that can simultaneously increase farming household income and drive the transition to sustainable agriculture,” said Kim Hae-won, CEO of Thanks Carbon. “It proves our competitive edge as a company that has preemptively built up technology in the rice-farming methane reduction market, which global giants like Japan’s Mitsubishi and Toyota have also entered.”

Meanwhile, Thanks Carbon is currently deploying international reduction projects in countries like Vietnam and Bangladesh. Collaborating with major partners such as LG Chem, SK Innovation, and KDB Bank, the company operates numerous nature-based carbon reduction initiatives, including blue carbon, ecological surveys, and low-carbon agriculture.
